Remark. Here is a tip for the top players. When I was playing tennis, I never allowed a players to play on the net against me. How? I saw them coming to the net and I did not try any lobs or passing shots! Instead, if I had any control on their ball at all, I would hit a devastating forehand or a backhand right at them! They put the ball in the net or it would slowly arc up off of their racket or sideways and fly just over and beyond the base line or the sideline since they could not position it because of the pace of it. They can basically just hope to return the ball since the force of the ball does not allow an effective return volley. Also the pace of the ball may not allow quick movemnet in some direction to avoid the body on the part of the opponent. So basically the opponent is barely able to make a return. This may be a little rude but then it is a game where you are playing to win and not for losing and they can do just the same. (I have seen Federer do that at times). In any case you do not intend to hit them anyway. You are just making an effort to get an error out of them. By the way, I liked to take the ball on my back hand (one - handed) and I could deliver more pace with the backhand than the forehand. This is true in general and can be verified. But analytically, it makes sense because a 2 handed backhand cannot have the full swing and shoulder turn (if you try to have a full shoulder turn with a two handed back hand you will lose sight of the court and the net and and your return will be dicey and out of control ) that a one handed return will have. And with the correct shoulder turn and the natural way the body falls forward, the body weight on the ball and the strike time will be larger with a back hand and not the forehand since you naturally try not to fall on the ball with your body weight with your forehand. That I guess is the body's natural reaction. But it is true you can control the placing of the ball more effectively with the forehand as compared with the backhand.
That is why a lot of players cover their backhand with their forehand, a little ungainly, not to speak of the tactical disadvantage of covering your bckhand with you forehand, see infra. The back hand can deliver more pace if you hit just about flat. I had both forehand and backhand very flat and that is the strongest shots you can deliver and with the greatest length and the length of your ground shots is absolutely critical. See infra for more on this.
