What do you think is the answer to these questions or wonderments?
The answers are complex and disturbing. Please, remember I am not trying to convince anybody. This anaysis is presented to show you how we work and may show us what to do.
The answer has to do with maturity and personal strength. Since I am not writing a detailed treatise on Psychology or psychological theroy of human development, I will deal with the subject quite informally and yet the analysis is quite rigorous. There are no two ways about it.
Do you think it is necessary for you to show the world or may be yourself that you can cross the pacific in, say a sail boat or on a raft. So if you do not cross the pacific on a sail boat, does that mean that you are lesser of a man or woman? Do I have to climb the Mount Everest to prove something. It appears to me that there is some adversary outside of you that you are trying to top. In fact we are always trying to top something.
The examples of Mount Everst and the Pacific were extereme on purpose but you are trying to do something of the that type in whatever you are trying to do. It has to be or else you are not even there. For example, do you have to become the Department Head? Do you have to work yourself to death so that you can buy a BMW or a million dollar home? And here is the controversial part. We somehow seem challenged by something ourside of us and have to go after it. Indeed, it is compelling and its strength varies from person to person. In some cases it is so strong that it can be a "Driving Force" and it becomes so strong in cases as to disregard all considerations of safety, respect and anything decent. This driving force can also get out of control and can be directed towards both negative and positive actions. By positive actions I mean those that promote all life-supporitng actions and the negative ones that promote all life-destroyingactions.
Indeed, you can see this driving negative and positive forces in yourself and others. In fact you can also detect the degree or the intesity of it. Remember, the degree and intensity of it and the type (positive or negative) will direct consequences on you and the ones close to you or ones affected by you. Fortunately, most of us can control this compelling force to a reasionable extent and hence stay out of trouble or learn to control it and stay out of trouble. But unfortunately, there are some that are going to succumb to this compelling force and its infinite variations and subtelties to different degrees and will be suffering or enjoing the corresponding consequences. Basically, let me summarise this as folllows:
